Federated Rural Electric Trust awards scholarships to 7 local graduates

(Jackson, Minn.) -- Seven area graduates have a diploma in one hand and a Federated scholarship in
the other.

The Federated Rural Electric Trust recently awarded seven $600 scholarships. One
scholarship was awarded in each of the seven Federated districts to the son/daughter of a Federated
member. These are the same districts used for the co-op’s director elections.

The recipients from each district are listed:

  • District 1: Taylor Salzwedel, Lakefield. He graduates from Jackson County Central High School. Salzwedel is the son of Dennis and Margaret.
  • District 2: Dastinee Vancura, Jackson. She graduates from Jackson County Central High School. Vancura is the daughter of David and Dawn.
  • District 3: Alysse Varilek, Jackson. She graduates from Jackson County Central High School. Varilek is the daughter of Lennie and Janet.
  • District 4: Jonathon Traetow, Sherburn. He graduates from Martin County West High School. Traetow is the son of David and Judy.
  • District 5: Spencer Seibert, Fairmont. He graduates from Fairmont High School. Siebert is the son of Paul and Norma.
  • District 6: Alyssa Sandberg, Fairmont. She graduates from Fairmont High School. Sandberg is the daughter of Dean and Ruth.
  • At-Large District: Tyler Harder, Fairmont. He graduates from Granda-Huntley-East Chain High School. Harder is the son of Brad and Vonnie Cone.

55 students completed Federated’s short scholarship application. This is the seventh year that students had to apply. Previously, one scholarship was awarded to the nine school districts, but this excluded home-schooled and neighboring school districts.

"The $4,200 worth of scholarships comes from Operation Round Up funds," said Federated's Trust Board President Scott McClure. "This is a charitable giving program where participating Federated members’ electric bills are rounded up to the nearest dollar amount. The extra cents go to a special trust fund administered by an independent Trust Board. In addition, unclaimed capital credits also are a part of these scholarships."

This is the 19th consecutive year that Federated has dedicated money to high school scholarships. This is the 14th year of Operation Round Up scholarships. They total $58,000.

"Currently, about 73 percent of Federated members are participating in Operation Round Up," McClure said. "If a Federated member's electric bill is not rounded up each month and you want to contribute, just call Federated. You will also receive a statement for your yearly contribution, which is tax deductible."

About a month ago the Federated Rural Electric Trust awarded $12,057 to local organizations. The funds were given to fire departments, educational programs and other community service organizations. The next round of awards will occur November 22. The deadline for interested organizations to submit applications is October 2. Call Federated at 507-847-3520 for more information and an application. Ask for Sherry or Andrea. Otherwise, download the form from the Operation RoundUp Section.

Federated is a Touchstone Energy cooperative that provides electric service to more than 5,000 members in Jackson and Martin Counties.
