(Jackson, Minn.) - Federated Rural Electric, Jackson, salutes the winners in its 2009 Youth Tour Contest.
Winning the grand prize was Kristin Schulz; she won Federated's free trip to Washington, D.C. June 13.;18. Second and third place awards of $150 and $100 were awarded to John Curley, Windom; and Henry Brown, Ceylon. Nine students entered the contest.
Schulz, Winnebago, is the daughter of Kevin and Carol. She is a junior at Maple River High School, Mapleton. She will be among 1,000 teenagers from across the country participating in Youth Tour, which is sponsored by electric cooperatives. Schulz will tour the D.C. memorials and sites, witness Congress in session, visit with legislators and enjoy an evening dinner theater, while learning about cooperatives.
John Curley, Windom, was also named as an alternate in the event that Schulz cannot attend. Curley is the son of Michael and Susan. He is a sophomore attending Windom Area High School.
Henry Brown, Ceylon, received third place. He is the son of Nathan and Sarah Brown. He is a junior attending Fairmont High School.

Each applicant completed an application and an essay on an energy-related topic. Each finalist and first 15 applicants also received a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com. The finalists were called back for personal interviews March 24.
"Federated is proud to sponsor this contest," said General Manager Richard Burud. "It's an investment in our youth and future. This trip gives local teens exposure to our industry and government in action."
